![]() A recent study conducted by the University of Cambridge found that consuming more than five alcoholic drinks a week can actually increase your chance of mortality from cardiovascular disease. For health enthusiasts who don’t want to take those chances, alcohol free wine is an option. There is a growing trend to abstain from alcohol for a period of time, eliminate it completely during a fast or diet, or simply try to be more mindful for long term health benefits. Whatever the case, an alcohol-free wine option can support your desired health outcome. Month after month there are opportunities that can easily throw you off your dedicated health and fitness program. From office parties, to the next upcoming holiday, summer vacation, your aunt’s party, the office celebration, drinks with clients, even hanging out after your fitness excursion…You get the idea. It adds up. And, so does the sugar intake. An alcohol free alternative is 0.0% alcohol. Period. So what exactly does alcohol free mean? It means, there is 0.0% alcohol in the wine, less than a glass of orange juice. In fact, 0.0 is pasteurized so no fermentation can occur after the wine is bottled. Alcohol free wines go through the same process and as all fine wines do with the same grape crushing and fermentation and other winemaking quality controls to get that hint of berry and lush flavors. However, in the very last stages, the alcohol is removed from the wine through reverse osmosis. Additionally, the process removes the sugar in the alcohol so 0.0 contains over 50% less calories and significantly less sugar than regular wine. The healthy benefits of alcohol free red wine are still in the beverage. A study, conducted at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona in Spain revealed that non-alcoholic red wine was linked to a significant decrease in blood pressure, as well as a 14 percent lower risk of heart disease and a 20 percent lower risk of stroke. Traditional red wine did not appear to have similar effects. Michael Yourison, owner of Buonafide Foods stated, “we filter out the alcohol while retaining the best possible tastes and aromas. My family and chef friends enjoy pairing the wine with fine dishes. We often enjoy the Mediterranean diet, with healthy olive oils from Italy paired with one of our fine alcohol free wines.” Much of the current demand for non-alcoholic beverages is driven by what is referred to as the wellness trend, with people wanting to feel better, at the gym, work and in life generally.
