Alcohol Free Trend with a Flavor of Italy

Picture
Many trends start in Europe.  It’s the land of ancient history, regional cuisine, love, fashion and the latest alcohol free wine trends.

Around one in five adults in the UK do not drink alcohol, according to the Office for National Statistics. Among the younger millennial age people, that number is even higher at just over one in four. The future consumers! And many more adults of all ages are trying to cut down on their alcohol consumption. It is a trend that goes along with the ever-increasing number of health-conscious consumers.

How is alcohol free wine made?
Reverse Osmosis is the technology process that filters out the alcohol while flavors and colors are preserved. Reverse Osmosis takes up to 2-4 passes to completely remove alcohol in wine. This natural process allows wine to maintain its organoleptic properties and enhances the grapes healthy characteristics while equating to significant less calories and less sugar.

How do Italians et al enjoy this trend?
As with any Italian meal, there is a fine art to pairing wine with authentic Italian food. One way to remember how to pair foods and wines is to remember a helpful rhyme: what grows together goes together. It means to eat foods grown and prepared in the same geographic areas as your bottle. It’s a full farm to table experience. Another growing trend!

Example alcohol-free wine and food pairings include:

Medium bodied white wine:  With fish, shellfish, sushi, ceviche', pork, chicken and salads.
Rosato (rose’) medium bodied wine:  Excellent with Pizza Margarita, Caprese Salad, Shellfish Pasta with light sauce, Oven Roasted Chicken or Grilled Chicken.
Italian red table wine:  Excellent with beef, wild game, pork, chicken and pasta's with meat sauce.
Sparkling wines:  Perfect for adding a “pop” to your special events and celebrations.

And, crusty Italian bread and authentic Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil go well with all wines!

Something to note as you explore this trend is that 0.0 Italian wines afford you the opportunity to partake and enjoy life’s events from drinks with friends to dinners and celebratory events without the negative effects of alcohol.  You can make the scene without making a scene.
La Buona Vita.

Alcohol Free Option for Health Enthusiasts

Picture
A recent study conducted by the University of Cambridge found that consuming more than five alcoholic drinks a week can actually increase your chance of mortality from cardiovascular disease. For health enthusiasts who don’t want to take those chances, alcohol free wine is an option.

There is a growing trend to abstain from alcohol for a period of time, eliminate it completely during a fast or diet, or simply try to be more mindful for long term health benefits. Whatever the case, an alcohol-free wine option can support your desired health outcome.

Month after month there are opportunities that can easily throw you off your dedicated health and fitness program. From office parties, to the next upcoming holiday, summer vacation, your aunt’s party, the office celebration, drinks with clients, even hanging out after your fitness excursion…You get the idea. It adds up. And, so does the sugar intake.

An alcohol free alternative is 0.0% alcohol. Period. So what exactly does alcohol free mean? It means, there is 0.0% alcohol in the wine, less than a glass of orange juice.  In fact, 0.0 is pasteurized so no fermentation can occur after the wine is bottled.

Alcohol free wines go through the same process and as all fine wines do with the same grape crushing and fermentation and other winemaking quality controls to get that hint of berry and lush flavors. However, in the very last stages, the alcohol is removed from the wine through reverse osmosis. Additionally, the process removes the sugar in the alcohol so 0.0 contains over 50% less calories and significantly less sugar than regular wine. The healthy benefits of alcohol free red wine are still in the beverage.

A study, conducted at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona in Spain revealed that non-alcoholic red wine was linked to a significant decrease in blood pressure, as well as a 14 percent lower risk of heart disease and a 20 percent lower risk of stroke. Traditional red wine did not appear to have similar effects.

Michael Yourison, owner of Buonafide Foods stated, “we filter out the alcohol while retaining the best possible tastes and aromas. My family and chef friends enjoy pairing the wine with fine dishes. We often enjoy the Mediterranean diet, with healthy olive oils from Italy paired with one of our fine alcohol free wines.”

Much of the current demand for non-alcoholic beverages is driven by what is referred to as the wellness trend, with people wanting to feel better, at the gym, work and in life generally.
La Buona Vita.

The Hot New Trend for Mom’s to Be & Breastfeeding Moms

Picture
Drinking non-alcoholic wine while breastfeeding or pregnant

Craving a glass of wine, or bored with water? There is a new trend for mom’s to be and breast feeding moms. Alcohol free wine. Women have so much pressure on the journey through mother hood—when to have children, whether to breastfeed, along with a myriad of other parenting pieces of advice coming from every direction and person. And, moms are happy to have choices, their choice!

There is an association for many people between wine and relaxation. In some cases, it may simply be the ritual itself which is relaxing, and not the alcohol. Luckily, there are now great beverage ideas for moms who are avoiding drinking alcohol and caffeine while pregnant or breastfeeding. Alcohol-free wines are a trend here to stay.

It’s important as a mom to keep your baby safe, when you are pregnant as well as when you are breastfeeding. Yes, relaxation to you is important and this is where the new trend of alcohol free wines helps. You’ll enjoy the same stellar blends and tastes, but with 0.0% alcohol you eliminate the health risks for you and your baby.

Is non-alcoholic wine safe for your baby? How is it made? More questions along the motherhood journey.

0.0% alcohol means exactly that. There is 0.0% alcohol in the wine, less than a glass of orange juice.  In fact, 0.0% is pasteurized so no fermentation can occur after the wine is bottled.

Alcohol free wines go through the same process and as all fine wines do with the same grape crushing and fermentation and other winemaking quality controls to get that hint of berry and lush flavors. However, in the very last stages, the alcohol is removed from the wine through reverse osmosis. Additionally, the process removes the sugar in the alcohol so 0.0 contains over 50 percent less calories and significantly less sugar than regular wine.

Mom’s to be and breastfeeding moms enjoy this new trend at their baby showers, as an option at weddings, New Year’s Eve celebrations, family get-togethers, etc. The social aspect helps all feel included, acknowledged and part of celebrations. There is something to feeling sophisticated holding a beautiful glass of wine.   La Buona Vita !

Wine, Women & Our Wellness

Picture
A Finer Look at Women’s Relationship with Wine

You know the scenario. Picture it.
The wooden table surrounded by friends, smiling, laughing, together. The table is neatly covered with oils, bread, appetizers, wine glasses, decor, stories and laughter. It adds so much more to the experience if we are in Italy, a yoga retreat, or visiting fabulous city dwellers at the trendiest spot. Or simply in our neighborhood environment with friends.

So much of women’s relationships with wine is about the social connections to other people. The entire social event. Because yes, we know that wine becomes a staple of “girl’s nights” and “girl’s getaways”.  We are wired to connect with each other and to interact in groups. A life that maximizes social interaction and human-to-human contact is good for our health. People who have more social connections and support tend to have better mental health, cardiovascular health, greater life satisfaction, and longevity over time. We are prone to be happier and enjoy life. True wellness.

Many see wine as a means for connection and relaxation. A stylish accessory too!

However, women truly process alcohol differently than men. The Wall Street Journal explains that women’s bodies “have more fat, which retains alcohol, and less water, which dilutes it, so women drinking the same amount as men their size and weight become intoxicated more quickly.” It means women become more cognitively impaired by alcohol and are more susceptible to alcohol-related organ damage. And, oh, the headaches. They hurt and affect our next day.

Many organizations target and market wine just to women. There are women sip and snack socials, sip-n-shops, and there are even non-profit events that combine Wine Women & Shoes, to pair wine with shoes and fund-raise for wonderful causes. We want to connect but we are also passionate about our health and wellness.

Women have started the wellness retreat trend for our health. We travel to empower ourselves and improve our mind/body connection.  Wellness holidays have grown in recent years with a surge of people traveling abroad to stay healthy. Many spa resorts will no longer be positioned as fitness amenities but lifestyle choices offering vegan and gluten-free healthy meal options and yes, even alcohol-free wine for those social scenarios we crave. Imagine, zero gluten, zero guilt and 0.0 alcohol. All whilst getting our social connection we so much crave.

If you walked into these retreat scenarios or restaurants offering zero alcohol wine, you might not immediately notice. Some of the alcohol-free wine options are artfully disguised as artisan mocktails with names like “Crackling Rose” and “Pretty in Pink”. And, every January boasts “National Mocktail Week”. Menus are being paired with flavorful dishes to accompany the alcohol-free wine. And chefs use the fine tasting zero alcohol wine to add zest to the latest healthy dishes.

The global health and wellness movement has consumers, mainly women who lead the trend, moving away from high calorie sugary drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Non alcoholic wine has 50% less sugar. According to statistics from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), 30% of American adults don't consume alcohol. Consumers are increasingly looking to beverages to play new roles in their diets and health routines.

Yes, we want our social scenario, our retreats and our health scenario combined. We are women and we want it all. And, now we can!     La Buona Vita.
